A man died tonight after he jumped into the south branch of the Chicago River to elude police, officials said.
The man, believed to be in his early 20s, was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:16 p.m., according to hospital spokesman Marcel Bright.
Aided by a police helicopter, the police Marine Unit worked for nearly an hour to rescue the man first spotted at about 6:45 p.m. in the river near the Turning Basin, in the 2800 block of South Ashland Avenue, officials said.
Authorities said the man was one of three men being pursued by officers for spray painting a building on Ashland Avenue, police spokesman Dan O'Brien said.
Officers were able to apprehend two of the men, O'Brien said, but the third leapt into the water to escape officers, a police source said.

Shayla Raymond's grandfather shook his clenched fist today as he wondered aloud if his oldest granddaughter would still be alive if she had just called him over the weekend.
The 15-year-old Bowen High School freshman, described by relatives as energetic and independent, was on her way home when she was fatally struck by as many as three vehicles, her family said.
"If she told me, I could have found a way to pick her up," the grandfather, Elmore Fernandez, 65, said as he wiped tears from his face.
Chicago police said Raymond was struck by a driver who was driving under the influence of alcohol. She then was thrown into the path of a second vehicle and hit again, police believe. Detectives are following up on whether a third car was involved.
Raymond had just stepped...
While everyone pretty much knew he was coming, it's still nice to see Capcom take the wraps off Super Street Fighter IV's final new character Hakan with a couple of trailers.
There's a gameplay trailer, above, and a character trailer below. Amazing how, even in these lo-fi web clips, he's already so oily.
Super Street Fighter IV will be out at the end of April, and will be released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Opening statements are likely Wednesday in the trial of developer Calvin Boender after lawyers questioned more than 30 prospective jurors Tuesday.
Boender is accused of paying for almost $40,000 in home improvements for then-Chicago Ald. Isaac "Ike" Carothers, 29th, to win his support for a large real estate development in his West Side ward.
On Tuesday lawyers questioned two panels of prospective jurors, asking if they had any experience dealing with Chicago's zoning system or ever had contact with aldermen or Mayor Richard Daley.
Attorneys are expected to wrap up jury selection Wednesday before making their opening remarks.
